Bear Mother 12" x 18"
Bear Mother 12" x 18"
This original handcrafted linocut print celebrates the deep mythic bond between a woman and a bear— a perfect piece of folklore-inspired home decor for those drawn to nature spirituality, pagan symbolism, and the storytelling magic of the Arctic Inuit. In the timeless, storied landscape of the tundra depicted, a polar bear and woman sit in an embrace — an image of tenderness and reciprocity that speaks to our ancient kinship with the wild.
Though sometimes told as an Inuit story, the tale of an old woman caring for a wild creature weaves its way through many heritages, stirring something ancestral within us. The act is transgressive and redemptive, reminding us that in mothering the wild, we are mothered in return — in a world that has long forgotten such values. The old woman does not ask for recognition. She does not need it. But we do. We need to remember women like her — to remember ourselves back into relationship with the living earth, the mother of us all.
This original handmade linocut print is inspired by an Inuit folktale about an elderly childless woman who finds a lost polar bear cub and raises him as her own. When he grows up, and she can no longer care for herself, he brings her food — a poetic reminder of interdependence and the sacred cycle of giving and receiving.
